According to the medical journal Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, Quinton catheters offer real utility in hemodialysis and infusion IV applications. An article published in the same journal and made available through PubMed.gov indicates that the Quinton catheter is a reliable and effective way to provide short-term vascular access for patients with conditions that prevent other methods of access.
What Is a Quinton Catheter?
Catheters are used in a wide range of medical treatment regimens. According to WebMD, a catheter is a flexible tube that is used to remove fluids from the body or to inject them into the body. Urinary catheters are among the most common. IV central line catheterization is also used to deliver medications, especially chemotherapy drugs. The Quinton catheter is a type of central line catheter that is used to deliver medicine or to perform hemodialysis when peripheral IV solutions are not practical because of small blood vessels or skin damage.

How Do Quinton Catheters Work?
According to the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants, hemodialysis requires the use of catheters that allow directional blood flow. Quinton catheters are large-bore catheters that feature double or triple-lumen capabilities, which allows them to take in large volumes of blood, treat it and return it to the patient's bloodstream in an effective and practical way.
Quinton Catheter Types
Catheters are generally classified as tunneled or non-tunneled depending on the length of time they can typically be used and the positioning of the catheter. Tunneled catheters are designed to pass under the skin and are intended for longer-term use. Quinton catheters are non-tunneled and are placed into a large vein in the neck, groin or chest area. In nearly all cases, they are designed for temporary and short-term use. Some of the most common Quinton catheter types include the following:
Quinton catheter solutions are classified according to the way in which they are used. Hemodialysis Quinton catheter applications are designed to allow blood to travel through the catheter into the dialysis machine and back into the patient's bloodstream. Chemotherapy Quinton catheters deliver medications to patients with cancer and other serious physical conditions.
A Quinton catheter may also be classified according to the number of channels it contains for medication or fluid flow. According to the London Health Sciences Center, these interior channels are referred to as lumens and allow intake and outflow of fluids or the delivery of multiple medications at the same time. Quinton catheters are commonly available in double and triple-lumen configurations. Of these types of Quinton catheters, the double-lumen models are most commonly used for managing hemodialysis procedures.
Most types of Quinton catheters feature straight tubing and connectors. Cuffed connectors may be used to allow for longer-term applications of these medical devices. Quinton curl catheters are also available for specialty applications.
Common Sizes of Quinton Catheters
Quinton catheter kits are available in an array of sizes for pediatric or adult patient use. Quinton catheter sizes range between 8 to 16 in diameter on the French gauge system. Lengths can vary much more widely but the sizes of Quinton catheters usually range between 12.5 and 45 centimeters in length. At CIA Medical, we offer a selection of common and uncommon Quinton catheter sizes to ensure the best results for your patients.
