When Do You Use a 27 Gauge Needle?

What Does Needle Gauge Mean?
Gauge expresses the measurements of a hypodermic needle. These consist of outer diameter, inner diameter and wall thickness. The gauge determines the size of the needle puncture and the amount of fluids it can deliver in a specific period of time. Based on the Birmingham wire system, needle gauges start at 1, which is the largest needle, and continue upward through the 30s. Each successive gauge is slightly smaller than the one before it.
27g gauge needles have the following dimensions:
- Outer diameter: 0.01625 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.4128 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Inner diameter: 0.00825 in. (variation 0.00075 in.) or 0.210 mm (variation 0.019 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.00400 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.1016 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Common lengths: 0.5 - 3.5 in.
The Luer lock connector that secures the needle to the syringe for the 27g needle is medium gray. This complies with the ISO6009 color coding system that enables you to identify the gauge by sight.
