23 Gauge Needles / 23g Needles
Medical professionals choose the 23 gauge needle for injecting hormones, steroids and other liquids into muscle tissue. This gauge with a longer length is also effective for spinal injections. Stout enough to infiltrate tough tissues yet slim enough to reduce discomfort, this size hypodermic needle is a mainstay in many medical settings.
Applications for the 23 Gauge Needle
23 gauge needles have a number of medical uses, from injections of steroids, naloxone and hormones in muscle tissue to analgesic spinal injections. It is often part of an IV system when a patient needs fluids on an ongoing basis for a short time period.

How Do They Determine the Gauge?
Each size needle has a gauge, which identifies its outer diameter, inner diameter and wall thickness. Classified according to the Birmingham wire gauge guidelines, needle sizes range from the largest to the smallest. Therefore, the 30 gauge needle is smaller than the 23 gauge needle. Each successive gauge is about 11 percent smaller than its predecessor.
The 23 gauge needle has the following dimensions:
- Outer diameter: 0.02525 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.6414 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Inner diameter: 0.01325 in. (variation 0.00075 in.) or 0.337 mm (variation 0.019 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.00600 in. (variation 0.00025) or 0.1524 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Common lengths: 1 to 3.5 in., 6 in. for spinal use
The International Organization for Standardization supplies the ISO6009 color coding system for hypodermic needles. The Luer lock that attaches the needle to the syringe is a specific color for each gauge. Deep blue is the designated color for 23g needles. This makes it possible to identify the needle size on sight.
