What Is a Chromic Gut Suture?
A chromic gut suture, also sometimes known simply as a gut suture or catgut suture, is a specific type of medical suture that is usually used for repairing soft tissue wounds and lacerations.
Often used for gynecological procedures, such as repairing wounds or damages to the genitalia, these types of sutures are absorbable. This means that they will naturally break down and degrade in the body over time, dissolved by the body's own enzymes and fluids, rather than needing to be removed manually.
Chromic gut sutures are available in a range of sizes and are an example of polyfilament medical sutures, which means that they are composed of multiple individual filaments bonded or threaded together. They have various advantages like strong elasticity to cope with swelling, and they're covered in a chromic salt coating to help minimize the risk of adverse reactions.

How Does a Chromic Gut Suture Work?
The way in which chromic gut sutures work is relatively simple, and very similar to other kinds of medical sutures. First, a surgeon or doctor will choose the appropriate size of chromic gut suture for the procedure at hand. They’ll feed the suture into a medical needle and then use one of several suture techniques to sew the tissue or skin together.
Chromic Gut Suture Sizes
Like other forms of medical sutures, chromic gut sutures are available in different sizes. On average, these types of sutures tend to be around 2-0, 0, or 1 on the USP size scale, ranging from around 0.2mm to 0.4mm in diameter. It's also possible to find them in various lengths.
Chromic Gut Suture Types
Chromic gut sutures are a very specific type of medical suture with its own specific features and advantages. There are not multiple types of chromic gut sutures, as they're all made with the same basic materials and the same general standards. However, there are many other types of medical sutures out there, from PDS sutures to vicryl sutures, and others.
Chromic Gut Suture Uses
Since chromic gut sutures offer great elasticity and pass through the skin with minimal risk of trauma, they're very useful for repairing different types of wounds in the skin. They're often used for closing wounds and lacerations to the face, as well as more sensitive parts of the body, like the genitals, for example. They can be used for both closing wounds as well as sealing surgical sites after operations. They are not, however, recommended for usage with the likes of cardiovascular or neurological procedures.
