What Is a Closed System Catheter?
Closed system catheters are a particular type of intermittent catheter. They can also be referred to as touchless catheters or no-touch catheters, due to the fact that the user doesn't have to touch the actual catheter tube at any point. This helps to make closed system catheters some of the safest to use, with the lowest risk of contamination.
Closed system catheters usually consist of several key components, beginning with the introducer tip at one end of the catheter tube, which is designed to make insertion as easy as possible and pass through the first few millimeters of the urethra. They also usually have catheter caps that are placed over the tips for protection until they are ready to be used. They have a catheter tube which is pre-lubricated for easy insertion, and a collection bag with measurement markings on the side which is used to hold urine.
As the name implies, a closed system catheter is one in which all of the necessary components for storage and drainage are provided and connected together in one complete system; the urine flows via the tip, through the tube, and into the bag, so there's no need for the user to have to find another receptacle or container to store the urine. Thanks to this, closed system catheters are very easy and convenient to use.

How Does a Closed System Catheter Work?
The way in which a closed system catheter works is just like any other urinary catheter. The tip is inserted into the urethra and the tube is pushed into the body to connect with the bladder. Once contact is made, urine can drain freely out of the bladder, passing through the tube and into the bag at the other end. Thanks to the design of closed system catheters, the user never needs to actually touch the tube itself and can simply maneuver the flexible, lubricated tip.
Touchless Catheter Sizes
As with any other kind of catheter, closed system catheters are available in a range of sizes to suit users of different ages and needs, from pediatric patients up to adults. Their diameter is usually measured with the French gauge rating, with sizes ranging from as small as 5 Fr all the way up to larger catheters of 20 Fr or more.
Touchless Catheter Types
There is only one main type of closed system catheter, and all suppliers follow the same basic design and model when creating their own closed system catheters. They feature a flexible and easy to insert tip at one end, a bag at the other end for collection of urine, and a long, thin, hollow tube between the two ends for urine to flow through. Closed system kits may also come with essentials to aid with insertion like gloves, underpads, lubricant, and wipes.
No-Touch Catheter Uses
The primary use of a closed system catheter is to allow urine to drain from the body. This can be important in individuals who are suffering from conditions like urinary retention, incontinence, blockages in the urethra, or other issues that may affect their ability to urinate. These systems are designed to be easy to use by the patient themselves and can be used in day to day life, rather than in a hospital environment.
Closed System Catheter Suppliers
Some of the top brands providing closed system catheters include Coloplast, Halyard Health, Cardinal Health, Medline, and C. R. Bard.
