The Basics of Huber Needles
Finding the right range of products for your medical facility can sometimes be challenging. We work with you to provide accurate information and guidance to make your purchasing process easier and more convenient now and for the future of your healthcare organization.
What Is a Huber Needle?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines Huber needles as hypodermic single lumen needles that are used to access infusion ports that are positioned under the skin. This Huber needle definition, however, does not indicate the many uses to which these needles can be put in the medical environment. These specialty needles are used to gain access to chemotherapy ports, to deliver medications through infusion ports and to deliver blood transfusions in the medical environment. Pedagogy Online Learning Systems notes that Huber needles are hollow and non-coring, which makes them ideal for use in penetrating skin and reaching ports safely and effectively.

How Are Huber Needles Used?
Because the Huber needle is hollow and features a beveled tip, it is ideally suited for accessing ports that have been implanted under the skin. The Huber needle is inserted fully into the port through the skin. Tubing is then attached to allow the introduction of fluids directly into the port. The beveled tip of the Huber needle will not remove silicone from the port, which is essential to prevent this material from sticking in the catheter line and causing blockages or other issues for patients immediately or over time.
Huber Needle Sizes
Depending on the size of the patient's chest wall and the depth of the patient's port within the chest tissue, different Huber needle sizes may be required to achieve the desired results. Huber needle sizes range between three-quarters of an inch to one and one-half inches in length. UofL Health, a regional healthcare system serving Kentucky, recommends using the smallest possible needle that can reach the bottom of the port and that is capable of delivering the therapy the patient needs. This practice can ensure the greatest Huber needle safety when administering medications for chemotherapy or giving patients blood transfusions to support the healing process.
Types of Huber Needles
Understanding the various Huber needle types can help you to make the most practical choices on behalf of your healthcare organization. These Huber needle types are most commonly used by healthcare providers in hospital or clinical settings:
- Port Huber needles: Non coring Huber needles are the standard for introducing medications through subcutaneous ports. These Huber point needles are expressly designed to prevent many of the risks associated with using other needle types to perform these necessary tasks.
- Non coring Huber needles: These Huber needle types are designed to eliminate the risk of small fragments of silicone or other medical materials in catheter lines or in implanted ports. By opting for non coring port Huber needle options, you can achieve the best results on behalf of our patients.
- Huber infusion sets: The Huber infusion sets available from CIA Medical contain some or all of the components needed to perform infusion therapy on patients with subcutaneous ports.
- Other types of Huber needles: CIA Medical can supply specialty Huber needle options that are designed to promote the best outcomes for your patients and the procedures you perform in your facility. Huber needle options include straight needles and needles with a 90-degree bend. Choosing the right option is critical to ensure Huber needle safety and to deliver chemotherapy, medications and transfusions in the most streamlined way possible.
