Indwelling catheter applications are generally used to help patients who have blockages of the urethra, issues with incontinence or temporary conditions that affect the ability to urinate in patients after injuries or surgeries. Types of Indwelling Catheters

- Transurethral catheters are inserted through the urinary opening of the urethra and into the bladder to allow the release of urine through the indwelling catheter. These urethral catheters are often preferred because they can be inserted by nurses rather than in a surgical procedure.
- Suprapubic catheters are inserted through a small incision in the abdominal wall that allow more direct access to the bladder. According to MedlinePlus, these catheters are usually required because of urinary retention, incontinence or after surgical procedures.
