What Is an IV Catheter?
An IV catheter, also known as an intravenous catheter, is a type of catheter that is designed to be inserted into a vein in the human body, or in animals. It provides venous access for medical practitioners, which can be useful for a variety of reasons.
IV catheters can be crucial during chemotherapy for cancer patients, for example, as they provide a conduit through which medication can pass into the patient's bloodstream. They can also be used in other situations when patient's need to have fluids or medicines delivered directly into their bodies, or in cases when the blood needs to be tested or monitored.
Given that veins are narrow and delicate, IV caths are designed to be as gentle as possible. They can be used in different ways and there are slightly different types available, including non-tunneled and skin-tunneled IV catheters. Different sizes of IV catheters are also available.

How Does an IV Catheter Work?
The IV catheter will be mounted onto a sharp needle, which is used to pierce the skin in various locations around the body - often in the hand or forearm. The needle will need to be guided through into a vein. Once it has entered, the needle can be removed and the catheter can be pushed through and secured in place with a bandage or dressing of some kind. The catheter can be connected to bags of fluids or medicines, depending on the patient’s needs.
IV Catheter Sizes
There are various sizes of IV catheters which can be used for patients of different ages. Very narrow IV catheters are often used for children or those with narrow, restricted veins, while large catheters can be used in healthy adults. Average diameters can range in size from 10 Fr up to 26 Fr.
IV Catheter Types
IV catheters can be divided into three main types: non-tunneled, skin-tunneled, and implantable. Non-tunneled IV catheters are used for short-term access to a patient's veins, like during an operation or while in an ICU, used for a maximum of one week. Skin-tunneled catheters are used for longer periods of time and are designed to minimize the risk of infection or contamination. Implantable ports feature catheters connected to reservoirs that are implanted into the patient's body to reduce the need for flushing.
IV Catheter Uses
IV catheters or IV lines are used in a wide range of situations in which a doctor or medical practitioner requires venous access in a patient. They can be used during chemotherapy, for example, to deliver medicines into a patient’s bloodstream, or during various surgeries and operations where patients may need fluids, blood, or medicines delivered into their bodies. IV catheters can also be used for blood testing and monitoring, too.
