What Is an 18 Gauge IV Needle?
The "gauge" of needles refers to the size of the hole in the needle, with higher gauges having smaller holes. Common sizes range from 16 gauge up to 30 gauge. 18 gauge IV needles are among the largest options out there and are used for a wide variety of IV purposes.
Like other IV needles, 18 gauge IV needles are typically inserted into key areas around the body, like the wrist, hand, arm, groin, or chest. They’ll be connected to a catheter, guiding the catheter tube into a major vein so that fluids and medications can be administered directly into the patient’s body.
18 gauge IV needles are among the most commonly used infusion supplies in hospitals and clinics all over the world. They’re very useful for delivering fluids to a patient to restore fluid balance after dehydration or water loss, as well as for delivering medicines of various kinds to treat a wide range of diseases and illnesses.

How Does an 18 Gauge IV Needle Work?
Insertion of an 18 gauge IV needle will usually begin with the patient either seated or lying down with one of their arms exposed. The doctor or nurse will then identify an injection site on the patient's arm (or elsewhere around the body) and will clean the area. They then usually tie a tourniquet above the area to limit the flow of blood before inserting the IV needle into the vein. The needle punctures the skin and is connected to a cannula, which is then inserted into the vein by sliding over the needle. The cannula can then be secured in position and used for infusion therapy via a connected catheter or IV line.
18G IV Needle Sizes
The main distinguishing characteristic of 18 gauge IV needles is that they are exactly 18 gauge in terms of the diameter of the needle hole. These needles are very precisely manufactured to meet the 18 gauge standard. There are other sizes of IV needles out there, including 16 gauge, which is slightly larger than 18 gauge, and 20-30 gauge needles, too.
18G IV Needle Types
In terms of type, 18 gauge IV needles are all very similar in their shape and design. They may have slightly different color coding or attachments, depending on the manufacturer, but they're all very similar overall.
18G IV Needle Uses
The main function of an 18 gauge IV needle is to puncture the skin to allow insertion of a cannula or IV line. Due to the relatively large size of these needles, they're commonly used for administering blood, delivering fluids to the body at a rapid rate, and for intramuscular injections.
