What Is a 20 Gauge IV Needle?

Needles are measured using a gauge system. The “gauge” of a needle tells us how big the hole in the needle is, and higher ratings are equivalent to smaller sizes. So, a 20 gauge IV needle has a smaller hole than a 16 or 18 gauge needle, but larger than a 22 or 24 gauge needle, for example.

20 gauge IV needles are among the most commonly-used sizes of IV needles. And like other kinds of IV needles, they are used for infusion therapy and administering fluids and medications directly into the patient’s bloodstream with the aid of a cannula and IV line.

Usually, 20 gauge IV needles are used to puncture the skin of the arm or wrist for rapid delivery of fluids into the body. They’ll be connected to a cannula, which passes over the needle as it enters the skin. And a full IV line and IV bag can then be connected to the cannula in order to allow for easy delivery of fluids to the patient.

How Does a 20 Gauge IV Needle Work?

Insertion of 20 gauge IV needles is relatively simple, and the first step of the process is to identify an injection site for the needle to be used. This site will usually be somewhere in the patient’s arm, but may be in another part of the body, like the thigh or chest, in some cases. Once the site has been identified, it will be cleaned. A tourniquet is then usually used to restrict blood flow to the area, before the needle is used to puncture the skin. The cannula then passes over the needle, which retracts, rather than staying inside the body. An IV bag can then be connected to the patient to deliver fluids.

20G IV Needle Sizes

The main feature of 20 gauge IV needles is that they are exactly 20 gauge in size. This means that it’s not possible to find different sizes of 20 gauge IV needles. However, there are other gauge sizes to choose from when you’re looking for IV needles, from 16 gauge IV needles all the way to 30 gauge models.

20G IV Needle Types

Even though there are different brands and manufacturers of 20 gauge IV needles, they’re all very similar in terms of overall shape and design. They may vary slightly in terms of the color coding and the plastic attachments connected to the needle itself, but most all follow the same type of design.

20G IV Needle Uses

20 gauge IV needles are used for IV treatment and infusion therapy. Since they're a little smaller than 16 and 18 gauge, they're commonly used with patients who have smaller veins. They can be used for delivering blood, fluids, and medicines into the body.

20G IV Needle Suppliers

B Braun, Teleflex, and Alaris Medical are among the leading suppliers of 20 gauge IV needles.
