What Is a 24 Gauge IV Needle?
Needles are typically measured using the “gauge” system, in which the gauge or G of a needle tells us how wide the needle actually is. Common measurements for IV needles include 16, 18 and 20 gauge needles, but it’s also possible to use 24 gauge IV needles, too.
24 gauge IV needles are some of the smallest and narrowest IV needles available. Due to their small size, they’re most commonly used for pediatric patients who have smaller bodies and veins, although they can be used in some rare cases with adult patients, too.
Like other IV needles, 24 gauge IV needles are designed to puncture the skin and provide venous access so that an IV line can feed fluids, such as nutrient solutions or liquid medications, directly into the body. When to Use a 24 Gauge IV Needle?
A 24 gauge IV needle is most commonly used in cases when pediatric (child) patients require infusion therapy. These needles are very small and narrow, so are best-suited in the small and narrow veins of children. They’re useful for delivering fluids into a child’s body if the child is dehydrated, for example, or undergoing surgery. They're also useful in cases when a child has suffered serious trauma and requires a constant stream of fluids into the body.

The main distinguishing feature of a 24 gauge IV needle is its size. These needles are always precisely measured at 24 gauge in terms of their diameter, so there aren’t any other sizes of 24 G IV needles to choose from. However, there are many other IV needle sizes, from 16 and 18 G to 26 and 28 G.
