What Is a Latex Catheter?
Latex is one of the most commonly used materials in the medical world, famously used for surgical and medical gloves. It can also be used for catheters, too, and the term "latex catheters" covers a wide range of catheters that are specifically made from latex.
Latex catheters are just like any other kind of catheters and can have various uses. The only distinguishing characteristic of these catheters is that they are made of latex, with the main catheter tube being fully made of latex, giving it a soft and flexible feel.
Latex catheters come in various types, including Foley latex catheters, intermittent latex catheters, and even airway exchange latex catheters. Each one has its own purpose, and latex has various advantages as a catheter material.
Latex's flexibility can be beneficial in easing the pain and discomfort associated with insertion, for example, and its thermo-sensitive nature can also make it a useful choice.

How Does a Latex Catheter Work?
The way in which latex catheters work depends on which kind of latex catheter you are using. A latex Foley catheter, for example, can be inserted into a patient's urethra and pushed inside until it reaches the bladder to allow urine to pass into a catheter bag, connected to the catheter at the other end. A latex airway exchange catheter, meanwhile, is used during atraumatic endotracheal tube exchange procedures.
Latex Catheter Sizes
Latex catheters can come in a huge range of sizes, with varying diameters and catheter lengths. The diameter of catheters is usually measured with the French scale system, with ratings usually ranging from as low as 3 Fr all the way up to 26 Fr for the largest catheters. Lengths can also vary, with average ranges from 250mm up to 750mm.
Latex Catheter Types
There are various types of latex catheters, as latex can be a useful material for various medical procedures. Latex Foley catheters are a very common type. These can also be called latex urinary catheters, and they’re designed for people who need assistance in passing urine. Intermittent latex catheters are used in a similar way, but are designed for short term use and can be self-inserted. There are also latex pediatric latex catheters for children, external latex catheters for men, and latex airway exchange catheters, too.
Latex Catheter Uses
There are many situations in which latex catheters may be used. They can help patients who are suffering from conditions like urinary retention or incontinence, for example, and may also be used for patients undergoing surgery or those suffering from mobility issues. Latex may often be chosen as a preferred material for patients who find silicone catheter insertion to be painful or uncomfortable.

Hollister, Covidien, Care Fusion, and C. R. Bard are some of the top suppliers of latex catheters.
