What Is a Nylon Suture?
Nylon sutures, as the name implies, are medical sutures made of nylon materials. These sutures fall into the category of non-absorbable sutures, which means that they will not naturally break down and be absorbed on their own, so have to be removed manually or left in place for a long-term duration.
Nylon sutures may be both monofilament or polyfilament, which means that they can consist of one singular strand of nylon or multiple filaments threaded together. There are also different varieties and names associated with nylon sutures, including Ethilon, Dermalon, Nurolon, and Surgilon.
In terms of usage, nylon sutures are favored in many situations due to their excellent levels of tensile strength and usability. They're ideal for closing up superficial skin wounds and surgical incisions. In fact, nylon sutures are among the most commonly used medical sutures for skin stitching, and they may also be used for soft tissue and vessel repairs, as well.

How Does a Nylon Suture Work?
Nylon sutures work in the same way as other medical sutures. First, a surgeon will need to select the appropriate size and type of nylon suture and attach it to a surgical needle. Then, they can make use of various stitching techniques to thread the nylon suture through the wound or incision site in order to repair the tissue and seal up the skin. Since nylon sutures are non-absorbable, they won’t dissolve in the body over time, so may eventually need to be removed at a later date.
Nylon Suture Sizes
Like other kinds of medical sutures, nylon sutures are available in a range of different sizes. They're measured using the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) system. Some of the most common sizes for nylon sutures are 5-0, 4-0, 3-0, and 2-0, but smaller and larger sizes are also available.
Nylon Suture Types
We can divide nylon sutures into two main types: monofilament and polyfilament. A monofilament nylon suture is one that consists of just one singular structure of nylon, while a polyfilament nylon suture is composed of multiple materials threaded together. Common brand names for monofilament nylon sutures include Ethilon and Dermalon, while Nurolon and Surgilon are examples of polyfilament nylon sutures.
Nylon Suture Uses
The main use of nylon sutures is to seal up and repair skin wounds and incisions. They're the most commonly used types of medical sutures for stitching up skin, favored by many surgeons due to their impressive levels of tensile strength. Nylon sutures may also be used for soft tissue and vessel repairs.
