What Is an Oral Syringe?
An oral syringe, as the name implies, is a type of syringe that is specifically used for oral administration of fluids and medicines. This makes them distinctly different to many other kinds of syringes which function by penetrating or puncturing the skin.
Like other kinds of syringes, an oral syringe consists of a central body or compartment, which stores the liquid before it is administered. There's also a plunger at the top for the user to control the flow of fluid, and a tip or spout at the base, through which the fluid can be drawn in or pushed out.
Oral syringes also usually have markings on the side to show how much fluid is stored inside them at any one time. They're available in a range of sizes, from small oral syringes that store just 1ml of fluid up to 10ml oral syringes for bigger applications.

How Does an Oral Syringe Work?
Oral syringes work in a very simple way. First, fluid will need to be drawn into the syringe. To do this, the tip of the syringe can be placed into a vial or bottle, and the plunger will be used to draw up the fluid. Once the fluid is in position, the syringe can be placed into the mouth of the patient, and the plunger will be used to push the fluid out.
Oral Syringe Sizes
Oral syringes are available in a range of different sizes. In fact, there are usually four main sizes of oral syringes in use in hospitals and healthcare settings around the world: 1ml, 3ml, 5ml, and 10ml. It is possible to find some larger oral syringes, but they are less commonly used. It’s important to select the right size of oral syringe for each situation.
Oral Syringe Types
Most oral syringes are very similar in terms of their design and style, but they can be divided into some subtypes. There are one-piece oral syringes, for example, which consist of one-piece plungers without any rubber grommets or other elements that could cause blockages or contamination. There are also metric-only oral syringes that feature metric-only markings on the sides.
Oral Syringe Uses
The main use of oral syringes is to dispense and administer fluid medications directly into the mouth or throat of a patient. They're very useful in cases where patients may struggle to swallow capsules or tablets, like for young children or patients with swallowing problems. They’re also useful when very precise measurements of a fluid solution need to be administered.
