What Is an Ostomy Barrier Ring?
An ostomy barrier ring, which can also be called an Eakin ring or ostomy seal, is a small, donut or hoop-shaped accessory made from flexible materials that are placed around the stoma to prevent leaks and protect the skin.
After a patient has a colostomy, bodily waste passes through the stoma, and the high levels of digestive enzymes in this waste can harm the surrounding skin. In addition, due to uneven skin contours and shapes, it's possible for liquid to leak out, which may cause even more irritation and distress to the patient.
Ostomy barrier rings help to solve these problems. As the name implies, they create a barrier around the stoma to soak up excess moisture and prevent it from coming into contact with the skin. They can be necessary add-ons for some people, especially those with uneven or wrinkled skin around the stoma.

How Does an Ostomy Barrier Ring Work?
The way in which ostomy barrier rings work is usually relatively simple. They come with their own sticky adhesive, so the patient can simply remove the barrier ring from its packaging and get rid of the protective layers on either side. They can then stick the barrier ring directly onto the dry skin around the stoma or onto the wafer, which can then be stuck onto the skin. It's important to gently apply pressure to the ostomy barrier ring to secure it in place and squeeze or mold it to suit the size and shape of the stoma.
Ostomy Barrier Rings Sizes
Ostomy barrier rings are available in various shapes and sizes in order to suit patients of different ages and body types. They're usually quite flexible and malleable, so patients can adjust them to suit their stomas, but it's still important to order the right size to fit each body.
Ostomy Barrier Rings Types
Ostomy barrier rings are usually divided into two main categories: conformable and unconformable. A conformable ostomy barrier ring is one that is very flexible and stretchy, which allows the user to mold the ring into the right shape to fit around their stoma. Non-conformable ostomy barrier rings are much more rigid.
Ostomy Barrier Rings Uses
The main reason why ostomy barrier rings are used is to create a barrier around the stoma that guards the skin against moisture, including digestive fluids and enzymes that can cause damage and irritation. They may be needed in cases when the skin has become irritated due to leaks or if the skin around the stoma is uneven and wrinkled, making leaks and problems more likely to occur.
