What Is a Polypropylene Suture?
A polypropylene suture, also known as a PP suture, is a surgical suture made from polypropylene. Polypropylene, or PP, is a thermoplastic polymer that has many applications. In the medical world, this material is prized for its excellent tensile strength and versatility.

How Does a Polypropylene Suture Work?
Polypropylene sutures work just like all other common types of medical sutures. First, the surgeon will need to choose the appropriate size of suture to work with, which will depend on the size and location of the area which requires repair. Once the right size has been chosen, the polypropylene suture will be attached to a surgical needle and thread through the wound or incision area to stitch it together. Since polypropylene sutures are non-absorbable, they can be left in place over the long-term while the wound heals up and may be removed manually later on.

Just like other sutures, polypropylene sutures are available in a range of different sizes. They’re measured using the standard USP sizing system, and some of the most commonly-used sizes of polypropylene sutures range from 6-0 to 4-0, although smaller and larger varieties are available.
