What Is a Quincke Needle?
A Quincke needle, which may also be referred to as a cutting-tip needle, is a specific type of needle that is most often used for lumbar or spinal puncture. These needles are easily identifiable due to their sharp, cutting tips with a hole positioned right at the end of each needle.
Quincke needles are named in honor of the German surgeon, Heinrich Quincke. Quincke was the first surgeon to introduce the process of lumbar puncture for diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and he lived from 1842 to 1922.
Like other kinds of spinal needles, Quincke needles are sharp, narrow, and carefully designed to be able to penetrate the skin of the back and enter the lumbar or epidural areas of the body, usually to help with the delivery of anesthetic into these areas before, during, or after surgery. They are among the most commonly-used spinal needles in the world of modern medicine.

How Does a Quincke Needle Work?
Like other kinds of spinal needles, Quincke needles are used to penetrate the spinal area to deliver spinal anesthesia or for diagnostic purposes. To do this, the patient will need to be either sitting down or lying on their side, providing access to their back. The back can then be cleaned and part of it will be numbed before the Quincke needle is used to penetrate the skin. Usually, these needles simply make a hole through to the lumbar space so that a catheter can be guided into the body and then used to deliver anesthesia or other fluids.
Quincke Needle Sizes
As with other needles, Quincke needles are measured using the standard gauge system, with average diameters ranging from 20 to 25 gauge. These needles can also vary in length from as short as 2" up to 4, 5, or even 10" models.
Quincke Needle Types
A Quincke needle is a specific kind of spinal needle, known for its distinctive shape and design. There are not many different types of Quincke needle, but there are other types of spinal needle that can be used in a similar way, like Tuohy needles, epidural needles, and Hustead needles.
Quincke Needle Uses
In terms of usage, the main purpose of a Quincke needle is to help deliver anesthesia into the lumbar area around the spine. This can be done in cases when patients are in high levels of pain or distress, such as those who are suffering from spinal injuries, or those who are about to undergo an invasive operation. Quincke needles are also used for diagnostic purposes to help doctors find out more about a patient’s condition.
