What Is a Robinson Catheter?
A Robinson catheter is a type of urinary catheter. It is designed to be inserted into the urethra of the patient and pushed inside the body to connect with the bladder, allowing urine to drain out from the bladder and into a receptacle or collection bag of some kind.
The most distinctive characteristic of Robinson catheters is the material used to make them; they’re crafted from rubber and sometimes known as red rubber catheters, due to the bright red color.
There are various reasons why rubber is used for Robinson catheters. Firstly, it’s very soft. This makes it more comfortable for patients to use for self-insertion and helps to reduce the risk of pain or discomfort. Secondly, they’re thermo-sensitive, which also makes the insertion process more comfortable for the patient.
However, these catheters are not suitable for those with latex allergies and should only be used in patients who have no adverse reactions to latex products.

How Does a Robinson Catheter Work?
As with other forms of urinary catheters, Robinson catheters are inserted into the patient’s urethra. Some lubrication will usually be applied to the tip of the catheter to ease with insertion, and it can then be placed into the urethra and pushed several inches into the body. It should eventually make contact with the bladder, allowing urine to flow through the Robinson catheter and out into a connected catheter bag or receptacle.
Benefits of Red Rubber Robinson Catheters
Patients who opt to use a Robinson catheter enjoy the softness and flexibility of the material that provides a more comfortable experience for the person who needs a catheter. These are also considered thermos-sensitive catheters, which means they adjust to the surrounding temperatures, making it more comfortable during application.
Downsides of Red Rubber Robinson Catheters
These catheters are made of a soft latex material and for that reason they are not advised for people who are allergic to latex. They are also extremely flexible, requiring more precision when doing self-catheterization. These are intermittent catheters, so they are not meant to be worn for an extended period of time. Before using a Robinson catheter, make sure you follow all your doctor instructions on how to do so and do not attempt to do it by yourself if it’s your first time. This procedure isn’t painful, but some cautions must be taken in order to avoid infections or future complications.
Robinson Catheter Sizes
When it comes to sizes of Robinson catheters, there can be a lot of variation to suit patients of different ages, genders, and needs. Female Robinson catheters, for example, tend to be shorter than male ones, as they have less distance to travel to reach the bladder. The average range of diameters for Robinson catheters ranges from around 10 Fr to 20 Fr, using the traditional French scale measurement system.
Robinson Catheter Types
In general, there is only one main type of Robinson catheter and all Robinson catheters look very similar and are used in identical ways. However, they may be divided according to the patients they are intended for, with male Robinson catheters for male patients, shorter female Robinson catheters for females, and pediatric Robinson catheters for use in children.
Robinson Catheter Uses
The main function of a Robinson catheter is to allow a patient to evacuate their bladder of urine if and when they are not able to urinate in a comfortable or conventional way. This may apply in cases where patients are suffering from urethral blockages or problems like urinary retention. It can also apply in cases of incontinence.
