What Is a Safety Syringe?
A safety syringe, which is sometimes referred to as a safety needle or retractable needle, is a type of syringe that is specially designed for extra safety when compared to traditional syringes and needles.
The main aspect of safety syringes that makes them different to traditional needles is the fact that the needle attached to a safety syringe is able to retract into the body of the syringe after injection.
This is done to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries, as hundreds of thousands of needlestick injuries still occur annually in the healthcare sector, and a lot of healthcare personnel worry about the risks of these injuries.
By using a safety syringe, there’s no need to feel any worry or concern about needlestick problems. These syringes are safer for everyone, including both patients and healthcare personnel, and they can be used for various forms of injections.

How Does a Safety Syringe Work?
The way in which safety syringes work is very similar to other sorts of syringes, but with one key difference: the retractable needle. So, when using a safety syringe, the needle punctures the skin as normal and helps to deliver the contents of the syringe into the body. But, after injection, the needle then retracts back into the body of the syringe. This vastly reduces the risk of any accidental injuries.
Safety Syringe Sizes
Safety syringes are available in a wide range of different sizes, as they can be used in a myriad of situations. Common sizes for safety syringes include 1cc, 3cc, and 5cc.
Safety Syringe Types
We can divide safety syringes into two main types: manual and automatic. With a manual safety syringe, the user has to manually retract the needle with the help of the plunger after injection. With an automatic safety syringe, the needle is specially designed to retract automatically on its own without any extra effort required from the user.
Safety Syringe Uses
Safety syringes have many different uses and can be used for all sorts of injections, like intramuscular injections, for example. They are specially designed to reduce the risk of injury to both the patient and the healthcare provider. Once the injection process is complete, the needle retracts into the syringe, rather than remaining sticking out at the base. This can make a real difference in terms of protecting people against needle injuries, as well as speeding up the rate and efficiency of injections throughout the hospital.

BD, Covidien, Sol-Millennium Medical, and Ulti Med are some of the top suppliers of safety syringes.
