What Is a Silk Suture?
Medical sutures are the materials used to seal up wounds and stitch up surgical sites after an operation. They can be made from a wide range of different materials, including natural and synthetic materials. When it comes to natural medical sutures, silk sutures are a popular example, favored throughout history due to their tensile strength and other advantages.
For a long time, silk sutures were the sutures of choice for many medical procedures. They're made from surgical silk, which is a natural protein derived from silkworms. The silk is treated and coated with silicone to provide additional strength and a very smooth surface for easy traversal of bodily tissues.
In the modern era, surgical silk sutures aren't used quite as much as they once were, but they're still useful for various general situations and have several advantages. They're also classified as non-absorbable sutures, meaning that they won't naturally degrade in the body.

When to Use a Silk Suture?
Silk sutures have a range of unique attributes which makes them well-suited for certain tasks. Since they have good tensile strength and excellent knot security, they can be used in various parts of the body with minimal risk. They can be used for ligature, for example, but may also be used to close skin wounds or during ophthalmic procedures. They may even be used internally to seal openings in the gastrointestinal tract, but silk sutures are used less often on an internal basis nowadays, due to advancements and developments in other forms of sutures.
Silk Suture Sizes
As with other types of medical sutures, there are various sizes of silk sutures available, and it's important to choose the right size for each patient and situation. Some of the most common sizes of silk sutures range from 6-0 to 2-0.
Silk Suture Types
Silk sutures may be made by different companies and have slightly different brand names, like Sofsilk from Covidien, but they're all more or less identical in terms of their structure and the materials used to make them. So there are not lots of different types of silk sutures, but there are many other natural sutures out there, like plain gut and chromic gut sutures.
Silk Suture Uses
Thanks to silk sutures' unique characteristics, these sutures are an ideal choice for various medical procedures. They're very commonly used as ligature, for example, and may also be of assistance when stitching up skin wounds or for other general procedures. They're also commonly used in the world of dentistry.
