What Is a SpeediCath Catheter?
SpeediCath is a brand name given to a series of catheters produced and designed by the Coloplast company. Founded back in 1957, Coloplast is one of the most experienced and trusted brands in the business of catheters, producing a wide range of catheter types and varieties, and the SpeediCath range has proven very popular.
SpeediCath catheters are designed for self-insertion and made for both men and women. As the name implies, these intermittent catheters are made to be as quick and efficient to use as possible, with very compact and convenient designs that allow the user to discreetly carry their catheters around and use them as needed.
SpeediCath catheters are single-use and hydrophilic, which means that they are coated in a special substance that provides instant lubrication when it comes into contact with water. They're packed in a sterile saline solution and have hygienic handles for the easiest and safest insertion.

How Does a SpeediCath Catheter Work?
As stated above, SpeediCath catheters are designed for patients to use on their own, in their day-to-day lives, outside of the hospital environment. They feature a hydrophilic coating that binds with water to make the tip of the catheter slippery and easy to insert. The user can then simply insert the catheter, pushing it several inches into the body until it connects with the bladder, and then drain urine from the bladder into a bag or other receptacle.
SpeediCath Benefits
- Easy and ready to use due to its unique hydrophilic coating
- Easy to use due to its intuitive design
- Reduced friction due to the polished eyelets and hydrophilic coating
- Ring-pull opening feature for easy opening
- PVC and phthalate-free, limiting environmental impact
The SpeediCath is designed with a unique coating that consists of three main elements: base coating, top coating and saline solution. The polished eyelets create smooth edges that help minimize friction and risk of urethra damage. SpeediCath catheters were designed to create a soft and easy transition when inserting and removing the catheter.
The company also offers the compact version of SpeediCath Catheters that is approximately half the size of the standard SpeediCath catheter, and it comes with a discreet design that makes it easier to carry and put away. The compact SpeediCath is highly rated among its users for being discreet and easy to use.
Coloplast won a gold in the Medical Design Excellence Awards for the revolutionary and advanced design that sets the standard when it comes to catheters for men.
SpeediCath Catheter Sizes
There are various sizes of SpeediCath catheters available in order to meet the diverse needs of male and female patients. These catheters are measured using the French gauge system, with average diameters ranging from 8 Fr up to 18 Fr. In terms of length, they're exceptionally compact and small enough to fit in a pocket or purse.
SpeediCath Catheter Types
There are various types of SpeediCath catheters that form the SpeediCath family. This includes standard SpeediCath catheters which are individually wrapped and packaged in their own sterile saline solution, ready to be folded up into bags or pockets. There are also SpeediCath Compact and Compact Plus models, which are very small at just 7cm and 9cm in length, respectively. There's also the SpeediCath Control, which provides the user additional control during insertion, along with the SpeediCath Complete, which is a closed-system catheter with its own collection bag.
SpeediCath Catheter Uses
SpeediCath catheters, like other urinary catheters, are used to drain urine out of the bladder when it would be difficult, painful, or impossible for the user to do so in a natural way. They can be used by people who suffer from incontinence, urinary retention, urethral blockages, and various other conditions.
SpeediCath Catheter Suppliers
SpeediCath is a brand name used exclusively by the Coloplast company.
