What Is a Spinal Needle?

A spinal needle, as the name implies, is a type of needle that is specially designed to be inserted into the spine or the area around the spinal column. There are various uses for these needles and they’re available in different sizes and varieties to suit the needs of the patient and the preference of the medical practitioner.

Spinal needles are primarily used for lumbar puncture to deliver spinal anesthesia into the body. They may also be used for diagnostic purposes, capable of puncturing the spinal canal. They are the only type of needles that should be used for injecting or puncturing the area around the spine.

Spinal needles are typically made of strong steel and can have slightly different designs. Common varieties include the quincke point spinal needle, as well as the pencil point spinal needles, which have slightly different shapes and features in the tip.

How Does a Spinal Needle Work?

Like other needles, spinal needles are used to pierce the skin and enter the body, either to deliver a fluid of some kind or to extract a sample of fluid from within the body. They have a very narrow, hollow, sharp tip which can puncture the skin relatively easily, and they're longer than many other needles in order to enter the lumbar area and deliver fluids. These needles, like others, are typically attached to syringes which contain fluids and medicines that can be pushed through the needle and into the body with the aid of a plunger.

Spinal Needle Sizes

As with other needles, spinal needles may vary in terms of length. They need to be very narrow and reasonably long in order to penetrate the skin comfortably and enter the area around the spine. In terms of diameter, most spinal needles range from 22 to 30 G.

Spinal Needle Types

Spinal needles can be divided into different subtypes and may have slightly different sizes, colorings, and designs. Two of the most common types of spinal needles are pencil point and quincke point. Pencil point spinal needles have a lateral hole along the side of the top to aid in the delivery of anesthetic or other fluids, while quincke needles do not have this lateral hole.

Spinal Needle Uses

There are various uses for spinal needles. One of the most common ways in which these needles are used is to deliver anesthetic into the space around the spine, otherwise known as an epidural. They may also be used to deliver dye into the area around the spine to make the area more visible for scans and diagnostic purposes.
