What Is a Medical Suture?
A medical suture is a type of surgical thread. Also known as stitches, medical sutures are used to close wounds or incisions after an operation. They're a very important part of the medical world, and medical sutures have been used throughout history, going back thousands of years.
There are various types of medical sutures, with different materials available and different sizes, too. There are also many different kinds of suture needles or surgical needles, which are the devices used to guide medical sutures through the tissue to stitch a wound or incision back together.
Since there are so many different types of medical sutures, it's important for the correct thread, needle, and suturing method to be chosen to suit each patient and situation in order to ensure that the stitched wound or incision site remains completely closed and will be able to fully heal.

How Does a Suture Work?
There are various different methods of suturing for use with medical sutures, with different stitch types and patterns available. The most common stitching method is the simple interrupted stitch, which involves cutting the medical suture thread after each stitch. There are also other options, like mattress stitches and continuous stitches. In either case, a medical suture will need to be attached to a needle and guided through the tissue around a wound or incision site to pull and stitch the two sides of the site back together.
Medical Suture Sizes
There are various different sizes of medical sutures, and different sizing methods are used. The most common measurement system used for sutures is the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) system, which has sizes ranging from #11-0 for the finest sutures to #5 for the thickest and heaviest sutures.
Medical Suture Types
There are many varieties of medical sutures, with a lot of different materials to consider when choosing a medical suture to use. In general, we can divide medical sutures into two main categories; absorbable and non-absorbable. Absorbable medical sutures don't have to be physically removed as they naturally degrade inside the body. Non-absorbable sutures, meanwhile, will need to be taken out by the doctor once the site has healed or may need to be left in permanently and will not degrade.
Medical Suture Uses
The main use of medical sutures is to stitch the tissue of a wound or surgery site back together, holding the two sides in place and preventing blood loss, while also allowing the wound to heal more effectively and reducing the risk of contamination or infection.
