What Is a Thermodilution Catheter?
A thermodilution catheter is a specific kind of character that is used for the medical procedure known as thermodilution. This is when a catheter is inserted through the bloodstream up to the heart to measure the temperatures, pressures, and cardiac output of the heart in patients who have heart problems or serious illnesses.
Like other kinds of catheter, a thermodilution catheter consists of a long, hollow tube that is very narrow and flexible in order to pass safely through blood vessels like veins and arteries without doing any internal damage to the body. It is usually divided into multiple channels, or lumens, which can be used for taking different measurements, like a thermistor lumen and PA distal lumen.
There is also usually a small inflatable part at the end of the catheter, known as a balloon. Once the catheter is in position, the balloon can be inflated in order to hold it in position for accurate measurements to be taken.

How Does a Thermodilution Catheter Work?
A thermodilution catheter needs to reach the heart in order to be used for measuring heart pressure and cardiac rhythms. To do this, it will need to be inserted into a vein leading to the heart. An insertion site will first need to be chosen and numbed. It can then be penetrated with a needle before the catheter is inserted through the incision into the vein and carried all the way to the heart. It is then fed through to a pulmonary artery and delivers a cold saline solution to the area and connected to a machine for data to be collected.
Thermodilution Catheter Sizes
As with other types of catheters, thermodilution catheters can vary in terms of both length and diameter. They generally need to be quite long in order to reach the heart during a thermodilution procedure, so may measure over 100cm in length. In terms of diameter, they usually range from 4 Fr to 8 Fr.
Thermodilution Catheter Types
Different brands may produce thermodilution catheters according to their own specific blueprints and designs, but these catheters all tend to follow the same basic design and are all almost identical, without any sub-types or categories.
Thermodilution Catheter Uses
As stated earlier, thermodilution catheters are exclusively used in thermodilution procedures, which are diagnostic procedures to check on the heart. Thermodilution is very helpful for measuring pressure and cardiac output, and these catheters can also be used to infuse fluids into the bloodstream, if necessary. They're useful for patients who are suffering from heart failure, heart diseases, and critical illnesses.
