What Is a Tiemann Catheter?
A Tiemann catheter is a type of male urinary catheter which is designed for intermittent use and may be self-inserted. The distinguishing characteristic of this type of catheter is its tip.
The Tiemann catheter tip is very slightly curved, unlike standard straight tip catheters. It has up to three drainage eyes in the tip, and the curved design can facilitate insertion for patients with narrow urethrae or urethral blockages.
Aside from its curved tip, the Tiemann catheter resembles other standard urinary catheters. It consists of a long, hollow tube, usually made from red rubber or silicone, which is inserted into the urethra and used for draining urine from the bladder and out of the body.
The tube is usually divided into two lumens. One lumens allows for the flow of urine, while the second is used to inflate a small balloon at the tip of the catheter to keep it in position after it has been inserted.

How Does a Tiemann Catheter Work?
The insertion technique for Tiemann catheters is similar to all other intermittent urinary catheters. First, the tip will need to be lubricated in order to make insertion as comfortable and painless as possible. Usually, a lubricant jelly will be applied. The tip can then be inserted into the urethra and pushed several inches into the body until it reaches the bladder and urine begins to flow out. Once the flow of urine has stopped, the catheter can be removed.
