What Is a Urinary Catheter?
A urinary catheter, as the name implies, is one that is designed to facilitate the flow of urine out of the body and into a container of some kind, like a collection bag. These catheters are most commonly inserted into the body via the urethra, but they may have other ways of working.
There are many different kinds of urinary catheters, including classic Foley catheters, intermittent urinary catheters, indwelling urinary catheters, and even external urinary catheters for both men and women, which do not actually need to be inserted into the body at all.
Each one of these urinary catheters has its own advantages, and there are also different sizes to suit patients of different ages, as well as varying materials, from very soft and flexible rubber and latex to more rigid alternatives like PVC.

How Does a Urinary Catheter Work?
The way in which urinary catheters work depends on what kind of urinary catheter is being used. If you’re using a standard urethral catheter, like a Foley catheter, the tip will first need to be lubricated. It can then be inserted into the urethral opening and pushed several inches into the body, until it makes contact with the bladder. Once this happens, urine should begin flowing out through the catheter tube. In the case of external catheters, they can be attached externally around the penis or labia in order to collect urine as it leaves the urethra.
Urinary Catheter Sizes
Like other catheters, there are various different sizes of urinary catheters to choose from. They are measured using the French gauge system, with average sizes ranging from as low as 6 Fr in diameter up to 22 Fr and beyond.
Urinary Catheter Types
There are lots of different kinds of urinary catheters, and we can divide them into a range of different categories based on their size, material, and design. There are internal urinary catheters, for example, which are inserted internally through the urethra or even through an incision in the skin to connect with the bladder and drain out urine, as well as external varieties that collect urine as it leaves the body. There are also straight, coudé, and various other kinds of urinary catheters.
Urinary Catheter Uses
There are lots of situations in which urinary catheters can be used, and they may be useful for both male and female children and adults. They make it possible for urine to flow out of the body in the most comfortable and convenient way for the patient, so can be useful in cases when conditions are preventing the patient from having control of their urination, like incontinence or retention.
