What Is a Vascular Catheter?
Vascular catheters, which can also be known as central lines, venous catheters, or central venous access catheters, are catheters that are designed to be inserted into the veins and access the vascular system. They may be used for diagnostic reasons or other purposes, like transfusion of fluids or medicines into the body.
Like other kinds of catheters, vascular catheters consist of long, hollow tubes which may be flexible or semi-flexible in nature. They can be divided into multiple channels, otherwise known as lumens, on the inside, allowing different measurements to be taken or fluids to be drained or transfused into the body, as needed. They also often have an inflatable balloon which helps to hold the catheter in place once it has been inserted into the body.
There are many potential uses for vascular catheters and they can help save lives and provide crucial treatment to patients with a range of diseases, disorders, and conditions.

How Does a Vascular Catheter Work?
Before insertion, the patient will need to undergo assessment and testing. An insertion site will need to be identified, which may be in the neck, the chest, the arm, or the groin. The area will be cleaned and numbed before an incision is made and the vascular catheter is inserted into the vein and guided through to the heart. Once the catheter is in position, the inflatable balloon at the end can be inflated to hold it in place.
Vascular Catheter Sizes
Like other catheters, there are various different sizes of vascular catheters to choose from to suit patients of different ages and needs, from pediatric patients to adults. They are measured using the French gauge system, with sizes ranging from 3 Fr up to 8 Fr, on average.
Vascular Catheter Types
There are several different types of vascular catheters and they can be divided into numerous categories, such as thrombectomy catheters, central venous lines, percutaneous central venous catheter, peripheral central catheters (PICC), tunneled catheters, and so on. One of the most common types is the triple-lumen catheter, which has three lumens that allow for multiple medicines to be inserted into the body at the same time in the same tube.
Vascular Catheter Uses
There are lots of situations in which vascular catheters may be used, and they may be useful for both male and female patients of varying ages. They're primarily used to provide venous access in situations when it would be difficult to do so peripherally, such as patients suffering from obesity, burns, or scars. They can be used to deliver important medications or fluids like vasopressors into the body, as well as for diagnostics and measuring the output and blood flow of the heart.
