Multi Absorber Medisorb disposables are designed to work with the CO2 bypass feature on some GE Healthcare equipment, providing a way to change and maintain your absorber.
Color Change and Reversion
As an aid in determining the progressive exhaustion of GE Healthcares Medisorb Medical soda lime, an ethyl violet indicator (sensitive acid based indicator) is added to the formulation. Medical grade Medisorb will change color from white to violet as the absorption reaction proceeds through the bed of absorbent in the direction of the gas flow. As the pH of the absorbent decreases below 10.3, the dye changes color from white to violet.
During intermittent usage of equipment, Medisorb will revert from violet to white due to an increase in pH at the surface of the Medisorb particle.
This color reversion is strictly a function of pH change and does not indicate regeneration of any absorptive capacity. Because of color reversion, it is important for the end user to establish degree of absorbent capacity exhausted. Color indication is not a definitive guide and should always be used in conjunction with CO2 monitors and time/volume calculations. If there is any uncertainty about the remaining Medisorb CO2 absorptive capacity, replace the existing material with fresh Medisorb absorbent disposables.
Multi Absorber Medisorb disposables have been tested and validated with GE Healthcare anesthesia machines and carestations helping to provide optimal performance.
Conforms with APSF Recommendations
During anesthesia administration, anesthetic agent degradation and dry soda lime can cause the production of Compound A and carbon monoxide. In accordance with APSF (Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation) recommendations, GE Healthcare Medisorb Medical soda lime does not significantly degrade volatile anesthetic when used as described in the accompanying instructions for use.
Absorption capacity tests have shown that Medisorb soda lime consistently absorbs ~150 l of CO2 per kg before experiencing a 0.5% CO2 breakthrough.
