DVT: A Preventable Problem
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). All are major public health problems in the United States. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a large vein, often in the leg. Part of a clot may break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism and possibly death.
DVT and PE are serious, often under diagnosed, but preventable medical conditions. It is important to know about VTE because it can happen to anybody at any age.
Prevention is preferable to treatment. When at-risk patients for thromboembolism are identified, doctors look at two potential prophylactic measures: anti-coagulation medications and mechanical methods such as lower limb compression.1
